![]() Like other Scout camps, Horseshoe
relies on council funding for its maintenance budget. What is unique however,
is the extent of support provided by Octoraro
Lodge 22 WWW, one of only a handful of 'Honor' Order of the Arrow lodges
in the Northeast Region. Each year, the Lodge donates to Horseshoe nearly
20,000 man-hours of labor and several thousand dollars in cash obtained
through OA fundraising activities.
Compared to all other Councils, Chester County consistently posts high performance levels: exceptional membership among Cub and Scout age boys, superior advancement, high Eagle Scout attainment, and nationally ranked participation by its troops at long term camp. That type of achievement would not be possible without a well maintained Horseshoe Scout Reservation.
Horseshoe Scout Reseration is a nationally accreditied camp, and consistently earns honors in the Northeast Region for its high level of attendance from in-council troops. Many out-of-council troops from New York to Virginia also call Horseshoe 'their' summer camp. Horseshoe employs approximately 90 staff members (60 at Horseshoe/30 at Ware). Selected from Chester County and neighboring councils, carefully screened staff members are nearing the completion of high school or are in college, and have demonstrated leadership skills in their troops. All receive training to ensure their mastery of counseling skills and various certification requirements. Employees at the Director level and above are young adults who are required to complete the BSA National Camping School course prior to employment. A number of non-paying, short term 'Counselor in Training' positions are filled by younger staff members who aspire to regular staff status in following years. |
